ALCOA VOLUNTEERS BRAVE WEATHER TO BUILD BRIGHTER FUTURE FOR ADULTS WITH DEVELOPMENTAL DISABILITIES.

Despite a cold rain throughout most of the day, the volunteers enthusiastically labored outdoors.  They spent several hours measuring, sawing, and nailing to build raised planters from treated lumber, creating wheelchair-accessible gardening beds.  The project will benefit clients of ASPIRE, the Center’s day program for adults with severe multiple developmental disabilities. 

Alcoa’s project will allow 43 adults with disabilities to benefit from therapeutic gardening activities.  This is the first phase of planned additions to ASPIRE’s therapeutic recreation area, which previously consisted only of a wooden pergola on a concrete pad.  The Easter Seals Rehabilitation Center hopes to add other phases in the future, including a water feature and wheelchair-accessible tables.

Alcoa’s effort at the Easter Seals Rehabilitation Center was one of many volunteer projects completed in the tri-state during October, which is Alcoa’s annual “Month of Service” benefiting nonprofit organizations and the people they serve.  While Alcoans volunteer year round, the Month of Service features the greatest concentration of volunteer events worldwide, with 17 countries and over 17,000 employees participating.
